Couples Therapy in Upper Rissington
We offer couples counselling in Upper Rissington and Online
Relationships can be one of the most rewarding parts of our lives, but they can also become places where we feel hurt, misunderstood, disconnected or stuck. Couples therapy offers a confidential and supportive space where both partners can talk openly about what is happening in their relationship and begin to understand each other more clearly.
We do not see couples therapy as being about deciding who is right or wrong. Instead, we help you explore the patterns that have developed between you, understand what may sit underneath conflict or distance, and find more helpful ways of communicating and relating to one another.
Couples come to therapy for many different reasons. You may be struggling with communication, recurring arguments, loss of intimacy, trust, infidelity, parenting, changing life circumstances or simply a sense that you have grown apart. Sometimes there is a particular crisis, at other times, couples recognise that something within the relationship needs attention.
Our approach is relational, collaborative and tailored to the needs of each couple. We aim to create an environment where both people feel heard and respected, while also being prepared to explore difficult issues honestly. Therapy can help you move beyond repeated disagreements and understand the feelings, needs and experiences driving them.
The aim is not to create a ‘perfect’ relationship, but to help you understand one another better, communicate more openly and make meaningful choices about how you want your relationship to move forward.

What Happens in Couples Therapy
Starting couples therapy can feel daunting, particularly if you’re unsure what to expect or one of you feels more ready than the other. You don’t need to arrive knowing exactly what to say.
Your first step is a free 30-minute telephone assessment. It’s important that both partners take part, so each of you has the opportunity to explain what brings you here, ask questions and discuss what you hope might change.
In your sessions, we’ll explore what is happening between you, including where conversations become difficult, disagreements repeat or you feel disconnected. The aim is to understand each other more clearly and find different ways of responding, with space for both of you to be heard.
Sessions last 50 minutes and cost £110 in person at our Upper Rissington practice or online. There is no obligation to book ongoing sessions after your assessment.

When the Same Argument Keeps happening
Do you sometimes feel that you and your partner are having the same argument over and over again, without ever really resolving anything?
Perhaps one of you wants to talk things through, while the other needs space. One person might feel ignored or unheard, while the other feels criticised or overwhelmed. Before long, you can find yourselves falling into familiar patterns, even when neither of you wants to.
Sometimes the difficulties are quieter. You might rarely argue, but feel that you've gradually become more like housemates than partners. The affection, conversation or intimacy that once came naturally might now feel distant.
Couples counselling can help you explore what is happening beneath these patterns, rather than simply concentrating on the arguments themselves.
Will the Counsellor Take Sides?
Can Couples Counselling Help After Infidelity?
Discovering an affair or experiencing a breach of trust can leave both partners with difficult emotions and unanswered questions. Counselling can provide space to explore what has happened, understand its impact and consider whether and how trust might be rebuilt. There is no predetermined outcome.
Common Questions About Couples Counselling
What If We're Thinking About Separating?
Not every couple comes to therapy knowing they want to remain together. Sometimes counselling is about exploring whether a relationship can change, while at other times it involves understanding what separating might mean. The purpose is to support thoughtful, informed decisions rather than push you towards a particular outcome.
Do We Both Need to Attend the Initial Assessment?
Yes. We ask both partners to take part in the free 30-minute telephone assessment. This gives each of you an opportunity to explain what has brought you to counselling, ask questions and see whether working together feels right.
Couples counselling isn't about deciding which partner is right or wrong. We aim to understand both people's experiences and help you recognise what is happening between you. This doesn't mean avoiding difficult conversations or ignoring behaviour that is hurtful. Both partners deserve to feel heard and respected.
